YOU’RE NOT IMAGINING IT

# Does any of this sound familiar?

If daily life with your child feels harder than it “should,” you’re not alone. These
are some of the moments parents describe most often.

## Mornings can unravel over expectations that seem small to everyone else.

## Everyday tasks can become surprisingly hard — even when your child wants to do the thing.

## A request that worked yesterday may feel impossible today.

## What might be going on

When a child with a PDA profile resists something, it usually isn’t about the task.
It’s about how the demand feels. Even small requests can register as a threat to
their sense of control, and their nervous system reacts before they can choose.
That’s why the same request can work one day and feel impossible the next.

You didn’t cause this, and your child isn’t trying to make life hard. They’re having
a hard time.

## What can help at home

General ideas to try. Every child is different, and these aren’t individual medical
advice.

### Lower the pressure

Share information instead of giving instructions. “It’s cold outside” can land more
gently than “Put your coat on.”

### Offer real choices

Small, genuine choices give back some control: which shirt, which order, now or
in five minutes.

### Calm first, talk later

When your child is overwhelmed, connection and calm come before problem-solving.
The conversation can wait.

### Plan for the after-school crash

Many PDA kids hold it together at school and fall apart at home. A quiet, low-demand
landing time can help.

### When words are hard

Some kids talk easily in one place and not another. Other ways to communicate count
too.

### Partner with school

When home and school share an understanding of PDA, your child can feel safer across
the whole day.
